Style for Eliot Society Publications

 

1. In all Eliot Society publications, titles of Society officers should always be capitalized, whether preceding or following the name of the officeholder. This includes the following:

President
Membership Chair
St. Louis Chair, Patrons Committee
National Chair, Patrons Committee
Chair, The Danforth Circle (“The” always capitalized)
Programs Chair

A former President should be referred to as “a past President of the Eliot Society” (“past” is not capitalized).

Formal committees include the Patrons Committee, The Danforth Circle Committee, the Membership Committee (the last includes all school, program, and national committees). Names of individual unit committees should follow normal style.

 

2. The formal name of the award given each year is the [year] Eliot Society Award. When using the name attributed to the original Heikki SeppŠ sculpture replicated in the piece presented to the recipient, always use quotation marks: the Eliot Society’s “Search” award, the “Search” award. Note that “award” is not capitalized in this context.

 

3. As noun:

1st reference: the William Greenleaf Eliot Society
2nd reference: the Eliot Society
Subsequent references: the Eliot Society or the Society

As adjective:

Preferred for 1st reference: Eliot Society
Optionally: Eliot or Society

 

4. Membership levels should also be capitalized as follows:

Annual Recognition:

member of The Danforth Circle (but Charter Member of The Danforth Circle)
Eliot Society Patron (2nd reference: Eliot Patron or Patron)
Eliot Society Benefactor (2nd reference: Eliot Benefactor or Benefactor)
Eliot Society Fellow (2nd reference: Eliot Fellow or Fellow)
Eliot Society Member (2nd reference: Eliot Member or Member)
(Lowercased “member” can refer to any level.)

List headings for Annual Recognition should consist of capitalized words of two letters (DC, EP, EB, EF, EM).

Life Recognition:

Life Danforth Circle member (or life member of The Danforth Circle)
Life Eliot Patron (2nd reference: Life Patron)
Life Eliot Benefactor (2nd reference: Life Benefactor)
Life Eliot Fellow (2nd reference: Life Fellow)
Life Eliot Member (2nd reference: Life Member)
Honorary Life Eliot member (2nd reference: Honorary Life Eliot)
(Lowercased “life member” can refer to any level.)

List headings for Life Recognition should consist of capitalized words of three letters (LDC, LEP, LEB, LEF, LEM, HLE).
