Capitalization

Capitalize north, south, east, west, etc. when referring to regions. Lowercase when referring to compass directions.

 

“Go two blocks south.”
“That’s what I like about the South and the Midwest.”
“Boston is on the East Coast.”
“I like the east coast of the lake for fishing.”

Registered trademarks must be capitalized or replaced with generic terms:

Baggies (plastic bags) Band-Aid (bandage)
Books on Tape (audiotape) Coca-Cola, Coke (soft drink, cola)
Drano (drain opener) Dumpster (trash container)
Freon (refrigerant) Frisbee (plastic flying disc)
Grand Marnier (liqueur) Jacuzzi (whirlpool bath)

Kleenex (tissues) Laundromat (self-service laundry)
Mace (tear gas) Ping-Pong (table tennis)

Capitalize only proper nouns for schools, departments, fields of study, majors, minors, and programs. Use the undergraduate bulletin as the reference for proper names on the Danforth Campus and the online medical bulletin for the Medical Campus.

Lowercase on second reference:

Capitalize the common noun elements of proper names in plural uses:

Washington University’s Board of Trustees is capitalized; boards of other organizations are lowercased.

Professional titles are capitalized only when preceding the name. Use lowercase when used without a name or when succeeding a name:
