The nouns that follow these words are alternate subjects and so require a verb that agrees with the nearer subject:

Eliot Society

The full title, William Greenleaf Eliot Society, is to be used on first reference. Eliot Society is acceptable for later references.

ellipsis ( … )

The keyboard command (Option + semicolon) is recommended for making an ellipsis because it adds a thin space between the three periods.

Add a regular space before and after the ellipsis. When the ellipsis falls between sentences, the sequence will be 1) sentence, 2) sentence’s ending punctuation mark, 3) space, 4) ellipsis, 5) space, 6) beginning of next sentence.

Acceptable in all references as noun or verb.

When providing an e-mail address in text, preferred use is placing it in boldface type or in a second color (if available).

   
emeritus

Use the appropriate form—emeritus for masculine singular, emerita for feminine singular, emeriti for masculine plural or both genders, emeritae for feminine plural.

References generally should follow the noun (i.e., professor emerita of music), but use “emeritus trustee.”

Engineering & Applied Science, School of The full title is to be used on first reference. Acceptable later references are School of Engineering, School, and engineering school. Included in this School is the Sever Institute Program of Continuing Studies; the full name is to be used on first reference, while the Sever Institute is acceptable for later references.

Following the AP stylebook, use ensure to mean guarantee.

“Please ensure that your application arrives on time.” See insure.

   
etc. Avoid in body copy. “Bring books, notebooks, slide rules, etc. to the exam” should be replaced with “Bring such items as books, notebooks, and slide rules to the exam.”
