Be careful to avoid unnecessary references to a woman’s marital status.

Use parallel terms for women and men (e.g., men and women, ladies and gentlemen, husband and wife, mothers and fathers). Also, alternate the order sometimes (e.g., women and men). Don’t refer to women as wives and mothers unless men are being identified as husbands and fathers.

Be alert to phrases that suggest all readers are men. For example, use “graduate students and their spouses were invited” rather than “graduate students and their wives ... .”
